YC Application Tips: What the Best Founders Do Differently

YCY Combinatoracceleratorstartupfundraising

Y Combinator accepts about 1-2% of applicants. The ones who get in share common patterns. Here is what they do differently.

The application

Be specific. Don't say "we're building the future of work." Say "we're building Gusto for construction contractors who spend 12 hours a week on payroll and compliance." Specificity stands out because most applications are vague.

Founder-market fit

YC cares deeply about whether you're the right person to solve this specific problem. A former teacher building edtech has a stronger story than a banker building edtech. If you have domain expertise, lead with it.

The interview

YC interviews are 10 minutes. You'll be interrupted constantly. The partners are testing whether you can think on your feet. Practice answering fast. If you pause for more than 3 seconds on a basic question, it's a red flag. Pitch an AI investor to practice rapid-fire questions.
