Cold Email Templates for Reaching Out to Venture Capital Investors
Cold emails to VCs get a 2-5% response rate on average. The ones that work follow the same structure. These are the patterns that actually get replies.
The structure that gets read
Five sentences max. Who you are, what you're building, traction with a specific number, why this investor, and your ask. No fluff. No "hope this finds you well." No attachments. Just signal.
The traction-based template
Subject: [Company Name] $8K MRR, 30% MoM, analytics for logistics. Body: Hi [Name], I'm the founder of [Company]. We build real-time analytics for mid-market logistics. 14 paying customers, $8K MRR, growing 30% monthly. I saw you led [Portfolio Co]'s round. We're adjacent. Open to a 15-minute call?
The research-based template
When you don't have traction numbers yet, lead with research. Reference a specific deal they did, a blog post they wrote, or a thesis they've shared publicly. The signal is simple: "I understand who you are and why this matters to you specifically." Practice your pitch before you send. Know your numbers the way a VC will ask for them.
